City Description
Shenyang is the capital city of Liaoning Province in the Northeast of China. It stretches a vast area of 13,000 sq. km. in the heart of the Northeast Asian Economic Circle and Bohai Economic Circle, establishing itself as an important economic, commercial and trade centre. It is also the Northeast’s transportation hub and largest commodity distribution centre.
The name "Shenyang" literally means "the city to the North of Shen River". Its history dates as far back as 300 B.C. when it was first established during the Warring States period. The city's development blossomed when it became the capital city of the Qing Dynasty in 1625. The Shenyang Imperial Palace, enlisted as part of UNESCO's World Heritage in 2004 and the second largest royal complex in China, was built at that time. Shenyang’s prestigious status remained after the capital was relocated to Beijing, and later evolved into one of the most important heavy industry centres of China.
In recent years, Shenyang has reenergized and successfully modernized its industry, thanks to the "Plan of Revitalizing Northeast China" implemented by the State Council. Machinery, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing are some of the city's current pillar industries. It has also made good progress in boosting its services and tourism industry. Together with its comprehensive transportation network, abundant natural resources and skilled workforce, Shenyang recorded a 16% year-on-year growth in GDP in 2008, while real foreign direct investment reported a 19% increase from the previous year to US$6 billion. Such economic vitality further cements Shenyang’s status as the economic centre of Northeastern China.
