The Hang Lung Brand on the Mainland: The Origins of “66”

Hang Lung Stories

The “66” brand is well-known as the insignia of Hang Lung on the Mainland. Many people believe that its usage is linked to a Chinese saying in which the numbers “3” and “6” represent the proliferation of endless opportunities. This is, of course, a reasonable expectation towards Hang Lung. Yet, the true origin of the “66” brand lies in Plaza 66.

Opened in 2001, Plaza 66 soon became a very successful project. As it is located at 1266 Nanjing Xi Lu in Shanghai, and there are 66 floors in one of its first office towers, the development was given the name “Plaza 66”. Following its enormous success, the number “66” has been adopted for the other Hang Lung projects that followed across the Mainland. The Hang Lung brand is then unified.

Currently, 11 properties across the Mainland proudly carry the “66” brand: Plaza 66 and Grand Gateway 66 in Shanghai; Palace 66 and Forum 66 in Shenyang; Parc 66 in Jinan; Center 66 in Wuxi; Riverside 66 in Tianjin; Olympia 66 in Dalian; Spring City 66 in Kunming; Heartland 66 in Wuhan; and Westlake 66 in Hangzhou. And the logos of these projects have also adopted “66” in their designs.

As Hang Lung developed its business from a twin-city (Hong Kong and Shanghai) model to one that spans the length and breadth of China, it has brought the “66” brand to numerous cities across the Mainland with the aspiration of becoming a highly admired and leading national commercial property developer.
