Hang Lung 65th Anniversary Series: The Placemaking of Kowloon Bay into a Thriving Community

News | May 16, 2025

In celebration of our 65th anniversary, we pay tribute to Kowloon Bay’s journey from an industrial zone into a thriving community in Hong Kong — a transformation made possible by Hang Lung’s developments in the 1980s that set a benchmark for urban living and created a neighborhood generations of families call warm homes.

This pivotal chapter in our history is strongly tied to our subsidiary, Amoy Canning (Hong Kong) Corporation Limited (香港淘化大同有限公司), manufacturer of beloved household names such as Amoy (淘大) for its signature sauces and the beverage Green Spot orange juice (綠寶橙汁). From 1981 onward, Hang Lung’s redevelopment of its factory site were completed in phases as Amoy Gardens (淘大花園) — a landmark residential estate comprising nearly 5,000 units, setting a bold standard in scale and community living at the time.  At the podium level of the estate, we established the 527,000-square-foot Amoy Plaza (淘大商場), which quickly became the center for shopping, dining and social gatherings in the district. Together with Telford Gardens (德福花園), another large-scale residential project jointly developed with Hopewell Holdings, these developments not only exemplify our vision for urban development but also foster vibrant communities that continue to thrive today.

The development of Kowloon Bay demonstrates our commitment to creating compelling spaces that adapt to changing needs and enrich lives.
