In Memory of Mr. Tung Chee-hwa: Honouring His Legacy of Leadership

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. On behalf of Hang Lung, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Tung's family and loved ones during this time of mourning.

Mr. Tung's dedication to public service, devotion to Hong Kong, and commitment to improving Sino-US relations have left an enduring mark on our country, our city, and our people. He led Hong Kong through some of its most difficult moments with resilience, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Mr. Tung understood the profound importance of housing and property market stability to Hong Kong upon assuming the role of Chief Executive in 1997. His insight into the link between housing, household confidence and economic well-being reflected a broad, long-term vision for the city. Time has proven his judgment to be remarkably prescient, with many of his policy positions ultimately vindicated as well-founded.

During the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, with the backing of the Central Government, Mr. Tung’s administration took decisive action in response to speculative attacks on Hong Kong’s financial markets. His leadership at that critical juncture helped safeguard the city’s financial stability and protect the livelihoods of its people. It remains a lasting testament to his courage, judgement and accountability in times of crisis.

When the SARS broke out in 2003 and the Amoy Gardens community was profoundly affected. His decisive response and genuine care for residents brought reassurance and hope at a time of great uncertainty. Hong Kong recovered quickly from this crisis under his leadership. 

Mr. Tung’s vision and unwavering commitment to public service have left an enduring mark on our city. We join the people of Hong Kong and the nation as a whole in mourning his passing and in paying our highest respects to his dedicated service.
