Hang Lung 65th Anniversary Series: From "Little Ginza" to lifestyle Landmark: We play a part in shaping Causeway Bay today

News | Apr 30, 2025

This month marks the establishment of two significant developments that helped shape Causeway Bay into what it is today.

Fifty years ago in April 1975, we proudly introduced the iconic Japanese department store Matsuzakaya (松坂屋), setting the stage for our deep-rooted presence in this electrifying district, constantly buzzing with dazzling activity. In 1976, we opened Hang Lung Centre on Paterson Street, followed by the acquisition of the commercial space in 1988 that once housed Daimaru (大丸), Hong Kong’s first Japanese department store. Together with Mitsukoshi (三越) and Sogo (崇光), these Japanese retail names helped Causeway Bay earn its affectionate nickname, "Little Ginza" (小銀座).

Today, our Causeway Bay Portfolio includes Hang Lung Centre and Fashion Walk, a lifestyle destination where customers enjoy unparalleled shopping and dining experiences. Fashion Walk – spanning Paterson Street, Houston Street (Food Street), Great George Street, Kingston Street, Cleveland Street and Gloucester Road – forms a unique retail streetscape against the backdrop of Victoria Harbour and Victoria Park, and plays a key role in Causeway Bay’s positioning nowadays as the trendy hub of fashion, dining, and lifestyle on Hong Kong Island.

As Causeway Bay continues to evolve, we remain committed to curating exceptional spaces that inspire, engage, and define the future of urban living.
